Obama Foundation Leadership Network (“Network”) Terms of Use
The Barack Obama Foundation (“Foundation”) operates the Network in furtherance of its charitable mission, to inspire, empower, and connect people to change their world. The Network is a place for noncommercial collaboration, connection, and encouragement within the growing network of Foundation program alumni, but we still need some basic terms and conditions on use of the Network. In order to access and use the Network, you must have accepted these Terms of Use when it was presented to you at sign up, and as it may be updated and made available to you each time you access the Network; for reference you may find the Terms of Use in the Resources Hub of the Network. If you do not agree to these Terms of Use, you may not access or use the Network.
1. What the Network allows
The Network enables users to connect with each other, build communities, and network with each other, using the features listed below:
Directory: searchable people directory with global map and contact details of users, with private messaging enabled between users
Live feed: a newsfeed aggregating content posted by users, with comments.
Forums: for structured discussion
Mentoring: Users can declare themselves mentors in specific domains so they
can be contacted by other users wishing to be mentored.
Sharing: communicate with others by sharing content such as status, photos,
videos, as well as creating events, groups, or projects.
Projects: users can work together to create a project.
Groups: users can participate in groups based on cohort, program, geographic
and interest areas
Events: allows Users to participate in events.
Moderation: A reporting tool allows users to signal to admins contents and other
Users that may be questionable, inappropriate, or in violation of the Community
Guidelines.
Opportunities board: Share and learn about job offers, funding opportunities
and more
Emails and notifications: users may agree to receive periodic updates and
notifications from the Foundation and Network (and may update these in their
settings at any time)
Media center: Users can access, upload and share files here.

These Terms of Use govern the use of each feature of the Network.
Limits on Access to and Use of the Network
The Foundation, only, issues invitations to register for the Network to individuals who are either enrolled in or have successfully completed a Foundation program (including, without limitation, the Foundation's Leaders Africa Asia-Pacific, Europe, United States; Scholars, Fellows and Voyagers programs). Invitations are personal and non-transferrable. This is a private, closed online community. Registrants are solely responsible for the information they associate with their account, and anything that happens related to their account.
Subject to your registration and ongoing compliance with this Terms of Use, the Foundation gives you a personal, non-transferrable, non-exclusive, revocable, and limited license to access and use the Network for your personal, educational, non-partisan, and noncommercial purposes. Your appropriate use of the Network is more fully described in the Community Guidelines (also accessible within the Resource Hub).
Your Personal Responsibility for Privacy and Security
The Network is a place for communication and connection; although this is a closed network for those affiliated with Foundation programs, do not share on the Network information that you would not want known or discussed publicly, and do not disclose sensitive personal information in your account profile. Remain mindful that what you share on the Network could be communicated further by your fellow users.
The Network’s privacy statement explains how and why the Foundation collects, uses, and shares information about you on this Network. If you have privacy-specific questions, contact [email protected].
Do not share your login credentials, or use unsecured devices or channels to access the Network. You are responsible for the activity that occurs on your account. If you have a reason to believe that a person is fraudulently accessing your account or the Network, immediately inform the Foundation by e-mail at the following address: [email protected]. In case of loss, misappropriation or unauthorized use of its password, immediately notify the Foundation at that address also.
Ownership and Permitted Use of Network Content 2
The Network contains content shared by the Foundation and invited users. You own the content that you share on the Network, just as the Foundation retains ownership of the content it shares on the Network, and our technology provider, HiveBrite, retains ownership of its platform (technology underlying the Network). The Foundation takes no responsibility for, and does not endorse, support, or guarantee, the accuracy, completeness, or reliability of content shared by users, or the services of the Network technology provider.
By sharing or uploading content on the Network, you:
● Represent and warrant that (i) the content is original to you, or that you have
obtained all necessary permissions to share the Content on the Network, and (ii) you shall remain personally responsible for any claims or concerns that arise from the content you share on the Network.
● Give the Foundation your worldwide, royalty-free, perpetual, irrevocable, non-exclusive, transferrable, and sublicensable permission to host, use, distribute, modify, copy, publicly perform and display, translate, and create derivative works of your content for purposes of operating the Network;
● Give other registrants permission to reuse your content [within the Network and/or for personal, non-commercial, or educational purposes]; and
● Waive any expectations of approval over or privacy in further uses of your content.
Important Usage Condition: Notwithstanding the foregoing and recognizing that the Foundation is a 501c(3) nonpartisan charity under U.S. law, you agree not to use, and not to allow others to use, any content on the Network in connection with lobbying, advocacy, political campaigns, fundraising, advertising, marketing, or commercial activity, in any country.
5. Respect Copyright and Other Intellectual Property
The Foundation respects the intellectual property rights of others. If you believe content on the Network infringes copyright, trademark, or another right that you own or control, notify the Foundation’s designated agent at:

6. Conduct and Reporting
Conduct yourself professionally and in accordance with the Community Guidelines. Take care to not use the Network to transmit any material that:
● Menaces or harasses any person or causes damage or injury to any person or property;
● Involves the publication of any material that is false, defamatory, harassing or obscene;
● Violates privacy rights or promotes bigotry, racism, hatred or harm;
● Constitutes unsolicited bulk e-mail, “junk mail,” or “spam”;
● Constitutes an infringement of intellectual property or other proprietary rights.
Further, do NOT use the Network to:
● Engage in political, partisan, or lobbying activities;
● Harvest or collect e-mail addresses or other contact information of third parties by any
means in order to send unsolicited communications;
● Use automated scripts to collect information or interact with the Network;
● Send or store infringing, obscene, threatening, libelous, or otherwise unlawful or
tortious material, including material harmful to children or that violates third party
rights;
● Send or store material containing malicious code (viruses, worms, time bombs, Trojan
horses and other harmful, destructive or malicious technology);
● Otherwise violate applicable laws, ordinances, or regulations.

Modification or Termination
You may delete your account at any time by contacting the Foundation at
The Foundation may also exercise its right to delete inactive accounts after a continuous period of two (2) years during which the User has not used the Community Website. The Foundation will give users two (2) week’s notice of deletion, notice will be sent to the email that was provided by the user.
The Network is in “BETA” and the Foundation may further develop or modify it or any content for quality or other improvements in the Foundation’s sole discretion. The Foundation will communicate with you about Network developments and modifications as such are implemented.
The Foundation reserves the following rights: to update these Terms of Use, or its Privacy Statement at any time and for any reason; to modify or cease operation of the Network, or any portion of it, at any time and for any reason; to remove, restrict, or suspend any registrant’s access to the Network for purposes of security, prevention of harm, Network integrity and wellbeing, continuity of operations, compliance with these Terms of Use, Community Guidelines and Communication & Branding Guidelines for Program Participants and Alumni, and/or Privacy Statement, all of which can be found in the Resources Hub, as well as legal or regulatory reasons.
All decisions of the Foundation are final and binding.
Important Legal Matters
The Foundation endeavors to provide clear rules and guidance for appropriate use of the Network, but makes no guarantee that the Network will always be safe, secure, or error-free, and as with any technical offering, there may be disruptions or issues that interrupt your access to the Network. Moreover, while the Foundation makes reasonable efforts to oversee activity occurring on the Network it is not possible for the Foundation to control the actions or inactions of Network registrants. Additionally, the Foundation expressly disavows any partisan or campaign-related opinions or activities expressed on this Network; such opinions and activities are unauthorized and may not be attributed to the Foundation.

To the extent permitted by law, the Foundation makes the Network available AS-IS, AS-AVAILABLE, WITH ALL FAULTS, WITHOUT REPRESENTATION OR GUARANTEE OF ANY KIND, WHETHER EXPRESS, IMPLIED, LEGAL, STATUTORY, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO: IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, TITLE, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, OR NON-INFRINGEMENT. By registering, you accept the risks inherent in accessing and using an online network, including but not limited to damage to devices or other equipment and/or loss or diminished privacy or control.
By registering or using the Network, you agree to the application of U.S. federal law, and State of Illinois laws, further that any legal action shall be brought in a U.S Federal or State court located within the State of Illinois.

Obama Foundation Leadership Network (“Network”) Privacy Statement
By registering and using the Leadership Network, you are agreeing to the Foundation’s use and retention of the personal data that you submit on the Network in accordance with this Privacy Statement, and the Foundation’s overarching Privacy statement, as well as the Network’s Terms of Use and Community Guidelines which are available in the Network’s Resource Hub.
Network Roles: The Foundation makes the Network website and app available to “users,” including yourself, who are current Foundation Leader, Fellows, Voyagers and Scholars or alumni of those programs. To accomplish this, the Foundation uses service providers like the technology provider KIT SAS (doing business as Hivebrite). In this regard, the Foundation’s role can be described as a “data controller” and its service providers’ roles can be described as “processors.” A chart with additional information about service providers is provided at the end of this document.

Information You Provide: In order to participate in the Network, as a User, you must provide the following information, so that we may operate the Network.
● Your first and last name
● Your birthdate
● Your email address
● Your affiliation with the Foundation (program, staff etc.)
● Sectors and issues on which you work
● The geographic area in which you are based (at the country or city level, as you chose)
The foregoing information is necessary for the Foundation to authenticate your account and operate the Network. Failure to provide this information may result in inability to register or use the Network.

The Network also offers users the opportunity to provide additional optional information, which would populate a profile visible to other Network users, like a directory. Optional profile information may include:
● Your employment (organization and title)
● Your location(s)
● Your language(s)
● How you would like to be addressed (pronouns)
● Your bio, skills, needs, and other professional introductory information (fun facts,
questions you can answer, other offers)
● Your online contact information (email and social media handle)
● A photograph or other professional visual representation of yourself
If you do not provide optional information, your Network profile visible to other users will be limited to your name, affiliation and country. This list of required and optional profile information may be periodically updated by the Foundation in accordance with the goals of operating the Network.
Additionally, during your use of the Network, you will have the opportunity to post, at your own initiative, content including personal information. You may decide to provide sensitive or special information (as defined by data protection laws), for instance, data revealing racial or ethnic origin, religious or philosophical beliefs, sexual orientation. By providing such data, you expressly consent to the processing of such data by the Network. Additionally, by providing such data, you agree that you accept the possible risks and consequences of (and the Foundation shall not be responsible for) your sharing of such data on the Network, including the potential for other users to save, reproduce, use or further distribute your data in unpermitted, disagreeable, or harmful ways.
Use, Sharing, and Retention of Your Information: The Foundation uses the information you provide for purposes of operating the Network, and as you consent. As is more fully described in the Privacy statement, the Foundation will retain the personal information it receives from you via the Network during the length of your use of the Network, unless there is a legitimate interest or legal basis for a longer retention period.
If you are based in countries with data protection laws, such as the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), be aware that the Network is a U.S. offering. But also that the Foundation processes the information that you provide via the Network on the legal basis of consent. This includes account authentication information, invitations to participate in Foundation or Network events and activities, any optional information you chose to provide via the Network and any analytics the Foundation uses to better understand the Network’s use and to make improvements to it. We may further have a legitimate interest in processing your personal data. For example, we may process your personal data to improve the Network, and to provide for the security of you, other users, or our staff. Read more about the Foundation’s privacy practices here.

Consistent with its Privacy statement, the Foundation may be required to disclose or share your personal information to comply with a legal obligation, to enforce the terms of use or other applicable rule, as well as to protect the rights, safety, or property of the Foundation, your fellow users, or other people. The Foundation further has a legitimate interest in sharing your information with its service providers who assist with operation of the Network. And the Foundation may share your personal information with consent.
